Frequently Asked Questions
About Bush Medijina
Who owns Bush Medijina?
Bush Medijina is proudly 100% Indigenous-owned and led by the members of the Anindilyakwa Services Aboriginal Corporation (ASAC). Governed by an all-Anindilyakwa women Board, our vision and operations are shaped by the cultural knowledge, leadership, and deep connection to Country that guide our Directors. This leadership influences every decision we make and ensures that our work reflects the values and traditions of our community.
Where are you based?
Our primary business operations are based in Angurugu on Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory. Home of the Anindilyakwa People. We have recently expanded an opened a Retail Store in Cairns, Queensland.
What makes Bush Medijina a social enterprise?
We’re a 100% Indigenous-owned social enterprise. Every product purchased directly supports employment, training, and wellbeing programs for Anindilyakwa women and families on Groote Eylandt.
Who benefits from my purchase?
Your purchase helps us reinvest directly back into Bush Medijina, allowing us to create more job opportunities for local Anindilyakwa women and provide training in bush medicine and other skills. The funds also support initiatives that strengthen our community, like cultural programs and health workshops. By reinvesting into the business, we can continue to grow, create more products, and support our people, ensuring a sustainable future for Anindilyakwa families.
What makes Bush Medijina different from other skincare brands?
Our products are guided by the wisdom of our grandmothers and aunties, who taught us how to use bush medicine to care for our bodies and our families. We work alongside skilled chemists to create high-quality products that honour this ancient knowledge, combining traditional healing plants with safe, effective formulations. Every product reflects our culture, our care, and our connection to Country.
Why don’t you share more about the healing benefits of your bush medicine products?
We’d love to tell you everything our grandmothers and aunties taught us about the healing power of these plants. But under Australian law, products must be officially registered with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) to make medicinal claims and that process is complex, expensive, and not built with businesses like ours in mind. No Indigenous bush medicine business has ever successfully registered their products under the TGA.
We believe this needs to change. Our bush medicines are part of who we are, and we’re proud to share them in the safest, most respectful way we can.
What does social responsibility mean to Bush Medijina?
Social responsibility means using our business as a force for good. We are a 100% Indigenous-owned and led social enterprise, committed to creating positive social, cultural and economic outcomes for our community.
Our social responsibility is grounded in:
Cultural integrity – We protect and promote Anindilyakwa knowledge, sharing bush medicine practices with permission, purpose and respect.
Community empowerment – We reinvest our profits into employment, education, and health initiatives for Anindilyakwa women and their families.
Ethical production – Every product is handmade in small batches, using native botanicals and sustainable practices that honour Country.
Transparency and accountability – We operate with honesty, ensuring our impact aligns with our mission and benefits our people first.
Our responsibility goes beyond business, it’s a commitment to strengthening our culture, supporting our Elders, and ensuring that future generations have the tools and opportunities to lead strong, independent lives.
Products, Use + Care
Are your products safe for sensitive skin or certain conditions?
Our products are made with natural ingredients and bush medicines traditionally used by our community. While many customers with sensitive skin have used them without issues, everyone’s skin is different. We recommend doing a patch test before use, especially if you have sensitive skin or a known skin condition.
Are Bush Medijina products safe to use during pregnancy and breast feeding?
Our products use high quality organic ingredients and the percentage of essential oils used is low, however we recommend that expectant and nursing mothers check with their midwife or physician before changing a skincare or using essential oils.
Do you test on animals?
Never. Our products are cruelty-free and tested only by our team of Anindilyakwa women (and happy customers!).
How should I store my products?
Keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to protect the natural oils and botanicals.
What is the shelf life of the products?
Please check the icon on each product - the open jar symbol shows how many months we recommend using it after opening for the best results.
Why does my product look different to the website?
Our products are handmade, at times the colour may vary between batches and against images. This can be due to the age of the bark or the time of the year the leaves and flowers have been picked. If there’s any issues with your products or you feel there has been a mistake please contact us at info@bushmedijina.com.au
Are your products environmentally friendly?
Yes. We use natural, biodegradable ingredients and eco-friendly packaging wherever possible, and we harvest our native botanicals sustainably.
